5 Things Working Weddings Has Taught Me

Over the past two years, I have had the opportunity to plan, prepare, and work dozens of weddings through my job. In fact, the only weddings I have ever been to are through work, I've never been to one as a guest. Sometime in the future I myself would like to get married, and the experience I have gained from working so many weddings has taught me a lot. It also gave me a good idea about what I do and don't like when it comes to the big day.

The first and most important thing I noticed at most of these weddings is that it is so important to surround yourself with people who will not stress you out. I think this is especially important during the planning and preparation stages, because there is already so much going on and so much to worry about. For example, at a lot of set ups and rehearsals, people ask the couple a million and one questions instead of just figuring it out themselves, which is stressful and time consuming. You want people around you who will make you laugh, lift your spirits, and just all around make you feel excited about the big day!

The second thing I learned is that detail matters. Some couples, spend a lot of time focusing on the intricate details regarding every aspect of their wedding, from the color scheme, to lighting, and even to the font that is being used on the seating cards. I think it is so important to be detail oriented because it truly makes the entire wedding come together.

Third, the photographer and videographer are the two most important people at the wedding aside from the couple. In the moment, chances are you are not really focused on the next day, or the future, or preserving the memories of the best night of your life. You will want to see the special moments through photos and videos later on, and you want them to be high quality.

The fourth lesson is to have a dope playlist. Music is everything, and it is so important to pick the perfect song to walk down the aisle to, to have your first dance to, and to turn up at your reception to. Music really sets the mood and turns the event into a party. If you are getting a DJ, make sure they know the type of music you want and when to cue the cha cha slide, cupid shuffle, and so on. If you are very particular (or cheap) and want to do your own music, that's cool too. Make sure you pick music that everyone can jam to, and make sure the playlist can last the whole night without repeating... because that can get awkward and annoying.

Finally, make sure your wedding day is about you. Through working so many weddings, I have witnessed so many couples who are always doing what other people want, and making sure other people will like it even if they don't really like it themselves. That is totally unfair because it is not their day! Do what makes you happy, and that's it.
